Dangers of Algae Water

This is found in water ponds and lakes and any bird baths backyard fountains water pots where water is stagnant if the water is blue green algae this is dangerous to any pet, algae can grow aggressively in nutrient water and fertilizer that runs off into pond from adjacent fields helps the bacteria to thrive.

If suspected after removal from the contaminated water supply affected animals should be placed in a protected area out of direct sunlight. Make sure they have plenty of fresh filtered water and good quality feed. Depending on disposure animals can have a good chance of survival.

What are the symptoms? Because blue green algae can produce two types of toxins, Microcystins an Anatoxins the Microcystins affect the liver and nervous system.

This then severely damage the liver causing organ failure which the body depends on for example the gastrointestinal tract is affected resulting in vomiting, diarrhoea and tarry stool Bloody or tarry stools refer to a stool sample that’s either dark red or black in colour. Bloody or tarry stools can indicate bleeding or other injuries in your gastrointestinal tract. You may also have dark, discoloured bowel movements, when the liver fails the animal becomes jaundiced blood sugar and protein levels stop this is when bleeding occurs. The liver filters toxins and metabolic by products from the body failure means a build-up of toxins that cause disorientation and seizure which can cause symptoms of shock or become comatose, if this failure continues then death is imminent.

Microcystins Symptoms: Diarrhea, Weakness, Lethargy, Lack of appetite, Bleeding, Pale Gums Shock Yellow tint to gums and skin, Seizure, Collapse and Coma, Death

Anatoxins Symptoms: Excessive Salivation, Excessive Tearing, Difficulty Breathing, Blue Discoloration of Skin and mucous membranes, Tremors, Seizures, Muscle Rigidity, Paralysis, Weakness or inability to walk, excessive Salivation, Disorientation, Coma, Death

Treatment: Act fast if serious bag it and seek medical attention, suggested that charcoal slurry cholestyramine, natural liver care.

 Prevention:  Keep bird baths and ponds clean fence off any dangerous areas and treat immediately.
